Worship The God of Jesus Christ
by Joel Hemphill
I am a minister of Jesus Christ and have been for over 50 years, but recently I have recognized and repented of some of my past mistaken theology. Jesus is for sure the supernaturally conceived, virgin-born, sinless Son of God; Savior, Redeemer, Messiah, and soon coming King, and the only way to God (John 14:6). But how can he be the supreme God if he himself has a God?
“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).
“I ascend to my God and your God” [Jesus speaking] (John 20:17).
“Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God...I will write upon him thename of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which cometh down out of heaven from my God” [the ascended Jesus speaking] (Rev. 3:12).
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” [Peter speaking] (I Peter 1:3).
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” [Paul speaking] (Ephesians 1:3).
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him” [Paul speaking] (Ephesians 1:17).
The fact is that Jesus spoke 1865 verses in the N.T. and in not one did he claim to be “God,” “God the Son,” or the second person of a triune God. What was Jesus’ claim?
“Messiah...will tell us all things” (John 4:25). “I that speak unto thee am he” [Jesus to the woman at the well] (v. 26).
What was the “rock” of Peter’s confession on which Jesus said, “I will build my church?”
“Thou art the Christ [Messiah]” (Mark 8:29).
This raises a serious worship issue. Jesus’ greatest lesson on worship is found in John chapter 4.
“The true worshipers shall worship the Father...for the Father seeketh such to worship him” (v. 23).
“For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” [Paul speaking] (Ephesians 3:14).
“Worship God” (Revelation 19:10). “Worship God” (Revelation 22:9).
According to Jesus the greatest commandment is:
“Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord.” (Mark 12:29). Note: Not “two Lords” or “three Lords” but “one Lord.”
“Father...this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Messiah, whom thou hast sent” [Jesus speaking] (John 17:1, 3).
“But to us there is but one God, the Father...” (I Corinthians 8:6). “One God and Father of all, who is above all...” (Ephesians 4:6).
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (I Timothy 2:5).
At the end of time John saw an angel fly in the midst of heaven having the eternal gospel to preach unto the entire world. He was saying:
“Fear God, and give glory to him...and worship him that made heaven, and earth...” (Revelation 14:17).
The above is fear, glory and worship to God our Creator, “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
