The Anointed Jesus

Mark Jones

Anthony Buzzard takes up the question of John 1:1 and the Doctrine of the Trinity.  Anthony reminds us that John, the writer of the passage, was a Jew and that we should understand his writing in a Jewish context rather than the later – post-biblical – gentile Christian context. This is an excellent presentation for every Bible student.

Pastor Mark Jones of Tennessee tells us that the words “Christ” / “Messiah” have a meaning. They refer to one who has been anointed.  Pastor Mark then reviews the anointing of the kings in Israel and goes on to tell us that God’s greatest anointed is the one we call “The Christ – The Messiah.” Jesus has been anointed with holy spirit by God himself. (Ref. Luke 4:18; Acts 2:36; Acts 10:38-48).

God the Father’s Servant - Jesus

Joel Hemphill

Author Joel Hemphill writes that Jesus is not God but rather the “Servant of God.”  Joel shows from Scripture in  both the Old and New Testaments that Jesus is God’s servant to bring grace and salvation to the people. This is a great short article that you won’t want to miss.

The Trinitarian Controversy in the Fourth Century

Sean Finnegan

Sean Finnegan gives an excellent overview of the fourth century development of the Doctrine of the Trinity. Sean describes the key players in what he calls a “horrifying story.” Those players include Alexander, Arius, Athanasius and Constantine. He also gives a review of the pivotal Council of Nicea as well as the councils which followed it including the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD. Sean’s paper is informative and a great study aid.

The Christian Persecutory Impulse  - by David Trim

Review by Barbara Buzzard

Barbara Buzzard takes up a series of articles by David Trim published in the magazine “Liberty.” Barbara agrees with much of what Trim writes about the propensity of Christians to persecute Christians throughout church history. She is in agreement with Trim that the tendency for this can still be seen in our Christian world today. Barbara does take sharp exception to some of Trim’s conclusions. She believes that Trim has too much bought into the rationalizations of some Christians seeking to justify individual and institutional persecution of dissidents.

Did Jesus Preexist as the Angel of the LORD?

Kermit Zarley

Kermit Zarley

In this short article, author Kermit Zarley of Arizona deals with the question of Jesus’ supposed preexistence as the Angel of the LORD.  Kermit writes that the idea of Jesus as an Angel in the Old Testament is not a Scriptural view and was 1st promoted by post-biblical gentile Christians after the Bible was written.

Your Faith Can Grow - Mark 9:14-18

Mark Jones

Pastor Mark Jones of Tennessee tells us that our trust in God can grow. He talks about the occasion when Jesus was not present and his disciples could not heal a man’s son.  Pastor Mark tells us that what was missing that day was not “Jesus” as such.
